Faux et Snow

Sorry that my beautiful Jillian is not in these pictures. I know that she makes my pictures so much more fun with her gorgeousness, but you’re gonna be stuck with boring old me again for another year! Yes, back to the grind. I have my first shift back at work today, and although I’m excited to get back into the swing of things, I can’t help to be a little disappointed that Jord and I’s holiday (which we anticipated and obsessed over so much) is already over. It went by so quickly – sigh. We had so much fun these past weeks in Vancouver, visiting with our beloved family and friends. Honestly, our time there was packed full trying to get quality time in with everyone, but we enjoyed it every waking moment! I feel truly blessed to have been given that time and I wouldn’t have changed the craziness of it all for anything.

Today I am posting some pictures of my favorite winter cape from Zara. I love texture, all the colors, and how it goes with absolutely everything in my closet. I took these pictures beside the Okanagan Lake in Kelowna. I’m dreaming that I’m back in them in real life. I’d kill to run around in the cold snow again. It’s 8:00 am in Cairns, and it’s already 30 degrees / 78% humidity! I’m already close to perspiring (EWWW), and to top it off our air conditioner has decided to just not work anymore. It’s definitely summer time here!!!

New Year ~ New News

…I know it is a little late, but wanted to share our Christmas card with you all…

We are so excited to share with the world that we will be welcoming a little bambino (or naval orange if you go by the current size on my iphone app) in July!  I hit the 14 week mark on Wednesday and am SO happy to be cruising into my second trimester.

We chose to wait until Christmas to break the news to our families, and had so much fun thinking up creative ways of telling them.  Every night before we went to bed we had a routine of looking up video’s of the week we were in, talking about names and planning out how our big reveal would go.  The timing was great to tell our families at Christmas as it was the 12 week mark and they were free to tell their friends and talk about it openly.  It was important for us to tell them face to face as well, and living in Vancouver meant the first time we would see everyone in person was Christmas…and it was so special!

So, if you are looking for ideas, i’ll share ours with you!

For Matt’s family, as it is their first grandchild, we wanted to do something personal with their new names like Auntie Becki.  We printed off a 12 week ultrasound (unfortunately it wasn’t our baby, but we had had our dating ultrasound at 6 weeks so there wasn’t much to see), and added little personal speech bubbles from the baby to the family member.  Here are a few examples.

We got these printed, put them in frames, and then had them open the gifts on Christmas Eve.  This blog actually worked as a great cover and helped with our surprise, as we told them I had been working on a craft for the family.  My mother-in-law was sure I had crocheted her a scarf, so it was amazing to see their faces when they opened the gifts and saw it was a grandchild!

For my family, we took a little bit of a different approach.  My brother and sister-in-law have two handsome little boys so this was the third baby announcement to happen for the Doells.  Matt found a really creative way of telling them, that incorporated a riddle for them to figure out in order to find out.  We added our own twist and this is how it went.

Before we drove to Kelowna for Christmas we hit up the grocery store and bought these items:

We wrapped them individually and placed their names on the outside.  So, my brothers got Uncle Ben’s rice, my dad got Papa Johns Pizza (which couldn’t have worked out better – my nephew calls him Papa and his name is John), I got Prego etc, and we had Matt’s brother anonymously drop them off at my parents house and ring the doorbell.  My mom got the box, and with no sign of Jordan brought the gifts inside with a little smile on her face.  She was intrigued and trying to think of who might do this random act of kindness, all the while Matt and I trying to keep straight faces.  We had a typed up note in the box to the Doell family, from Santa and the elves, and instructions to open the gifts all together.  At this point my sister-in-law was on to us!  Her motherly instincts kicked in and she knew something was up, I could see her face out of the corner of my eye.  We opened the gifts all together, and watched as everyone tried to figure it out.   My younger brother mentioned how rice is a pretty stupid gift, and my mom was trying to match the pasta sauce and the pizza box together because they are both Italian food.  They were confused, but Rachel knew.  Finally, after Rachel had opened her Aunt Jemima, and she had seen that I opened Prego, her suspicions were confirmed.  She gave the family a good minute to work through the random gifts and then declared to the family, “Does nobody understand?! Jill’s pregnant!!!!!!!”  It was the perfect timing and such a fun way of sharing our news!!  I’ll never forget the looks of confusion turn to tears of joy and excitement!!

The Christmas card was sent to extended family and given to our friends as a way of breaking our news to them.  I had so much fun planning the surprise and so happy with how it all turned out.

So here I am at 14 weeks, can’t wait to keep you updated !

Happy New Year Friends!

Well, I’ve been a busy little bee trying to make every moment with friends and my family special. It’s been so good to be home.

2012 was quite the year to say the least, and I can’t believe that it’s over. When I reflect on this past year it makes me feel excited that our first year on our 5 journey is already over. We moved to Australia with basically the clothes on our back, and now we have a home, new friends, a new job, and lots to be thankful for. I can’t wait to see what 2013 has in store for us!

Typically for New Years Eve we have a Party at Jill and I’s in-laws house with all our friends and siblings, however, this year we decided to switch things up a little. We decided to be city-slickers and ring in the New Year downtown Vancouver. We ended up at a cozy little restaurant called Establishment. What a night it was!! My feet are still throbbing from dancing the night away. How was your New Year’s Eve? Would love to hear how you rang in the New Year.

Deck The Halls

Merry Christmas Everyone!!

I hope that the holidays are treating you well. As for moi, my Christmas has been blissful. Heaps of fun filled extravaganza’s, including the Vancouver Christmas train, the German Christmas Market, and of course a Christmas play. Tonight we celebrate Christmas Eve – my absolute FAVORITE day of the entire year! I come from a German family, so our tradition is that we celebrate Christmas on Christmas Eve. I know it’s not how most of the world does it, but to me, it’s extra special. Everything is lit up so magically at night and the lights on the tree just glow!

We have been staying with my darling sister Brittany, at her and her hubby’s new home. Brittany is so talented at not only decorating herself (as she always looks gorgeous), but her home too. This Christmas I asked if I could feature her and her home and I’m incredibly glad she said yes. I’m excited to be sharing this with you all. She has such an amazing way of making her home feel so warm and it seriously gets you in the spirit of the season. Her traditional, vintage style has won me over. I love her sweet hints of silver and gold metallic among the crispness of vintage white. She loves to shop for her decor at Restoration Hardware, The Little White House, Pottery Barn, and Home Sense. Hope you like it as much as I do!

Home for the Holidays

I cannot believe we’ve already embarked on our 29hr travel day home to Vancouver. One more flight after this until I see my family and friends, who I haven’t seen in almost a year! It seems as though I’ve been counting down the days for so long that now that it’s actually happening, it seems surreal.

As I sit on this ridiculously long plane ride, I’ve been reflecting on what the year’s been like. We have come a looooong way. I remember sitting on this exact flight going the opposite direction, with not a clue of what was on the other side. I was terrified and a little excited for an adventure, but I was mostly emotionally exhausted from saying goodbye to my main people. I slept almost the entire flight over to Cairns without a sleeping pill. Well, I am so happy I’m on the flip side now, coming back to catch up and celebrate Christmas and New Years with them all. However, now I can’t sit still! I’m just too excited.

In honour of travelling, I’ve put an outfit together that’s chic and I think is very Mary-Kate Olsen, yet still incredibly comfortable for any long travel days.

I had to take into account that I’ll be going from 37-degree weather to 5 degrees and under, so I chose a lot of basic shaded pieces so that it’s easy to layer! A few of my personal travel staples include, a jersey maxi skirt, which is always an elegant and comfortable choice. A hat to hide my pillow pasted hair. A pair of boots – and why not be a diva and make them heeled?  A plain white t-shirt, some arm candy and red lips of course, just to spice things up!

Bon Voyage!!

Christmas Crafts…take 3

First of all, I just want to say it is so good to be back!  I too have been quite busy here in Vancouver as I am just finishing up my first semester as a student teacher.  Let me tell ya…teaching is hard work!!  I have a new found respect for all of the teachers in my life – You.Are.Amazing.

So now that I am finding more spare time here and there, I decided to do some christmas crafts.  As you all know by now I love getting crafty and I get some great inspiration and ideas from Pinterest.  I decided to embark on some pins that had been lingering around my boards for awhile that I had yet to try.  I’ll be really honest here, I had two epic fails and one craft that turned out rather cute.  So I’ll start the Christmas season off with these…I hope you like…and I hope you try!!

I made these gift tags with 3 every day ingredients.  Here is the recipe:

* 2 cups all-purpose flour

* 1 cup salt

* 3/4 cup water

Mix these three ingredients together, slowly adding the water until you have a workable dough. Roll it out, cookie-cutter it out, and bake at 200 degrees for 15-20 minutes.

Simply. Easy. Cute.

I then got out my stamps and sharpie and went to work decorating.  I loved the simplicity of a letter on the small tags to represent family members.

These little birdies turned out to be my favourite…

Make sure when you are punching out your shapes that you take a straw or toothpick (for the small circles) and punch out a hole to thread your string through.

Add them to a gift, or even hang them on your tree.  Other ideas to jazz them up would be to add sparkles to your dough before you bake it, or a little dab of food colouring.  How fun!

So far this season: Christmas Crafts – 2 … Jillian – 1

But sometimes it takes a few funny fails to get an outcome you truly love.

Happy Thanksgiving fellow Canadians!

Much to my dismay, Australia does not celebrate Thanksgiving (at least none of the Australians we know). This was a big disappointment for me as I love everything Thanksgiving has to offer. It’s a time of being with family, eating your face off, PUMPKIN PIE, and turkey-coma. How could a person not love that? Usually I have about 4 Thanksgiving dinner’s each year. My mom usually cooks one, then my mother-in-law, and then both of my grandma’s. Being away from family this year I felt a little left out, so I decided to attempt to bring thanksgiving over here by cooking a big meal. I have never cooked such a massive dinner in my entire life, but it turned out great!

This past weekend, I attended my very first ball! It was for all the dental students, so I went as my husbands date. What a night it was. Here’s what I wore, and a peak at my hubby and I at the ball.

Off To The Races

Colorful hats, fascinators, gloves and high heels equals my heaven! I had an absolute ball this past weekend at the Amateur Horse Races. I went with my dear friend, Emma and some of her friends. I didn’t gamble, and I barely kept up with the actual race part of it. In fact, I’m afraid I was the biggest creeper ever, because I people (lady) watched the ENTIRE time. All the ladies looked ravishing! A heavenly fashion hue filled the air and I took in every minute of it. (I’ve been a little deprived of it lately but I definitely got my fill on Saturday). 10,000 people all dressed in their Sunday best, cooped up under all these tents. It really was an amazing event and for the first time in awhile, I felt like fashion was not the LAST thing on everyone’s list of priorities. I was in my glory!

Here’s what I wore and some pics of the races.

My Big Fat Greek Anniversary

This past week was Jord and I’s whopping 2nd wedding anniversary.  We made it!! I get so excited when our anniversary comes, its almost as exciting as both of our birthday’s combined. I nearly forget about it each year and then when I realize the few weeks before its such a delightful surprise! It makes me dream of the future and reminds me of all the lovely memories we’ve shared in the past. One in particular was Jord and I’s fairytale first encounter. Strangers from the same city and determined to see the world, we set out on an trip of a lifetime. Jordan was traveling the world with his brother (Jillian’s hubby) and I was backpacking through Europe with my girlfriend. We both happened to be in the same traveler’s calling center in Rome, Italy at the same time and Jordan got up the courage to introduce himself. The chance encounter in Rome was only the start as we learned that we had the same travel plans from the next day, right through to the following week. Through Rome, Athens and then Santorini, there was no denying that the “Big Guy” and His divine intervention wanted us to meet.

I dug up some old pictures from yester-year.

This year for our anniversary, Jordan had the romantic idea to make a weekend out of it and re-live our meeting in the Mediterranean.  We rented scooters and cruised around Cairns, we went for a Mediterranean-inspired dinner the first night, and Jordan made me a delicious Greek souvlaki meal the other night.  The weekend felt as though we were almost there again. We felt young and carefree, it was pure bliss. My face still hurts from my constant smile.  A reminder of how much joy Jordan has brought to my life since meeting him 5 years ago. Life with my BFF just seems to be getting more and more wonderful. What’s your story? Send me an email about how you and your other half met. I’d love to hear from you! Email: mariejanelleblog@gmail.com.

With all the reminiscing and re-living, I of COURSE had to come up with a look that I would like to wear if I were to go back to Greece. The Hi-Lo skirt is fun and flirty, the top is the color of the roofs in Santorini, and the hair and necklace add just the right amount of Greek Goddess!

World’s End

Top-Kmart/World’s End Pants-Esther Boutique/Fringe Purse-H&M/Shoes-Steve Madden

I’m really excited to show you my latest purchase, “World’s End” pants from Esther Boutique. I’ve been endlessly searching for a pair of pants that are not black or denim (Boring!). So finally, when these showed up on their online store, I knew they were mine. It’s the second time I’ve seen a pair of pants with two different legs, and I feel as though they were made for me. It’s like wearing two different moods, which I feel I have been the queen of these past few months trying to put on a happy face and servant heart at work, when inside all I want is a day off (which I hadn’t had in weeks)!!

Jordan and I were fortunate enough to be able to book a day off together to celebrate his birthday! I love celebrating birthdays! The day after a romantic dinner on the beach and a surprise games/party night with our friends, Jordan and I continued the celebration of his birth by road tripping up to Port Douglas. His friend lent us his car (bless his heart) and we truly enjoyed just cruising around. The drive was absolutely breathtaking. It reminded me of a tropical version of the Oregon Coast. Once we arrived in Port Douglas we enjoyed walking around the streets and markets, had a nice lunch at the Ironbar and just enjoyed each others company. Port Douglas is a not-so-distant treasure. If we owned a car, I would definitely be there every weekend.

Here are some of my Instagram pictures from our trip – Enjoy!

Have a good week everyone!
